Uphoff Value Index (UVI)

Five things you control every quarter, and the one number the market sets from them. A working model for value creation, not a static scorecard.

Business valuation drivers in the Uphoff Value Index: five drivers leadership controls every quarter, Revenue Quality, Market Position, Operational Leverage, Leadership Depth and Exit Readiness, translating into the market multiple

What are the business valuation drivers for a B2B information, marketing or technology company?

The Uphoff Value Index (UVI) is a model of the business valuation drivers leadership controls, and it runs in two layers. The first is a decision framework: five categories leadership controls every quarter, Revenue Quality, Market Position, Operational Leverage, Leadership Depth and Exit Readiness, scored the way an operator experiences the business. The UVI tool adds a sixth, the Custom Driver, so you can name and weight the factor that matters most in your own business. The second translates that score into what the market pays for: Sector × (Growth + Margin) × Scarcity + Client Premium = The Multiple.

A banker’s multiple is a report card, not a playbook. It describes what the market is paying for decisions already made. The UVI moves the conversation to the decisions still ahead, the ordinary days between now and a transaction, when a call either compounds toward value or quietly bleeds it. Those decisions are the business valuation drivers, and they compound or bleed value every quarter.

How to use it

  1. Score the five categories honestly.

Revenue Quality: what happens if your biggest customer leaves tomorrow? Market Position: do you own the category, or compete for it? Operational Leverage: does revenue grow faster than headcount? Leadership Depth: could this run 90 days without you? Exit Readiness: have you mapped the buyers who would want this business?

  2. Translate the score into the multiple.

Sector, the growth-versus-margin trade-off, scarcity and client premium are the levers a buyer prices.

  3. Run it every quarter, not once a career.

The number rarely swings hard in ninety days. The trend shows customer concentration creeping up or operational leverage eroding long before a buyer does.

  4. Use the interactive tool.

Score your business in the UVI tool and track the result each quarter.
